Cheap The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia (Tribeca Festival Premiere)

Director Nitzberg shows that when you have a life as slaves on a coal-mining carousel, sometimes you have to be pretty wild to free yourself. In West Virginia, where people are trapped by mine owners... and sometimes by the mines themselves.... where lack of education keeps people ignorant and easy to manipulate... where more people work harder... and die from it... than any place in America... you need a certain kind of wildness to break out of it.

We may cringe at snorting cocaine on a hospital bed right after giving birth... but what else can you do? It's not strange that Hank Williams III and GG Allin are both on the soundtrack here. One is a heroic deadguy, the other's grandfather was one. In an oppressive society, freedom IS self-destructive. At least you get to choose your poison.
