Akira's Hip Hop Shop Order Now

Sugoi desu ne!!!! I am an African-American and I love the film. It was romantic and realistic at the same time. I do wish it was longer. I am deeply attracted to asian men and I have found some who like Black women. I'm dating a Korean guy now. I would love to see more films that explored interracial relationships. I can speak Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. So, I know when I move to California I will definitely look for my own Akira ^^ to marry. I will be on the look out for more of these films as well as James Kyson Lee. He gave me nosebleeds. I'm definitely going to buy this DVD. Black women needs to know that we are attractive to men of other races and the men need to know they are desired!!

Jesse Stone: Sea Change Decide Now

Chicks, guys - Tom Selleck is a magnet for all. I love him, my husband loves him and we both adore this series. And Tom just keeps getting better and better, his voice getting gravell-ier, his face jowl-ier, and yet, good-looking men - they age like good wine, especially men like Tom Selleck, Pierce Brosnan, George Clooney. Never particularly cared for Magnum PI, but still - I watched - because of him. Yeah, he's a chick-magnet, at least for this chick.Get more detail about Jesse Stone: Sea Change.

Save Pilot

The show is entertaining and addictive. The interaction of the characters is what makes this show a must see. The two lead characters work together to solve white collar crimes, one is FBI, the other is former (or maybe still practicing) criminal on a work release. There is a light touch of comedy in their communications with each other. They both work well together and are learning the perspective of the 'other side' from each other as they solve the crime. Both characters have appeal. Neal easily stretches the rules to get what he wants, Peter goes by the rules. But you can see Peter working on Neal to keep things legal, and Neal's pushing Peter towards the boundary edge of the rules. Peter is likable, very clever, by the book, knows a lot about Neal and is good at figuring out what Neal is up to. Neal is clever and has his own agenda that he conceals from Peter (or does he?), which is part of a story arc mystery for the first season. These two, Neal and Peter, respect each other, and work as partners, but the game is on between them. You are also treated to gorgeous shots of New York that make a beautiful backdrop when these guys go outside. I watched the first five episodes so far (and rewatched the episodes too) and look forward to the next ones because its that good.Get more detail about Pilot.

Discount Resident Evil: Degeneration

Sporting graphics that are occasionally wonderful, the voice actors from the games, and sly winks to fans of the game-saga, Resident Evil: Degeneration exists only for those who have grown up playing the games.

The story does a great job of providing a seamless transition from Resident Evil 4 to 5 while throwing in many character cameos and references that will excite any fan, however, it does not have enough depth to fully entertain someone unfamiliar with the games.Get more detail about Resident Evil: Degeneration.

From the opening sequence, I knew this was going to be even better than the original X-Men. I loved the combination of Nightcrawler's attack on the White House with classical music. Cheap Get Smart

This is a cute movie, but if you bought the Get Smart BluRay hoping to use the digital copy it comes with, you're out of luck. The included digital copy disk expires December 9, 2009. Warner Brothers response to my request for an updated key for the digital copy on my brand new disk was this:

"We have researched your issue and this Digital Copy offer has expired. The Digital Copy offer is for a limited time only. The terms of the offer are specifically stated on the outside packaging. The Digital Copy offer is intended to be available for a limited time for discs purchased near the initial release date."

Bonus points to anyone who can actually find that stated on the packaging. I found it buried in fine print on the digital copy key page inside the case after it was already too late. Guess it's time to make my own DRM free digital copy...Get more detail about Get Smart.

Buy Bend It Like Beckham

Jesminder "Jess" Bhamra is the 18-year-old daughter of Punjabi Sikh immigrants living in London . Jess likes playing "football" or soccer (known to us Americans). Her idol is David Beckam a famous soccer player in London. Her parents disapprove of her playing. It's not the Hindu way to be running around with boys and "showing her legs". Her mom wants her to marry traditionally and be a homemaker just like her. Jess meets Juliet who has her try-out for a woman's soccer team. Jess gets on the team and has to lie to her family about where she has been spending her time. Jess's sister is about to get married to another Indian boy. But with Jess's running around, hiding, and lies it almost costs her sisters wedding.
Bend it Like Beckam shows a lot of the different ways Indian woman are breaking out of their traditions and becoming more contemporary. From Jess's sister having sexual relations with her fiancé before marriage to teenager girls wearing belly shirts and wearing blue contacts lenses. Some even dye their hair blonde in order to look more Caucasian and less Indian. In the Hinduism religion Indian woman are suppose to marry another Indian boy. In the locker room the soccer team was asking Jess who she was allowed to marry and she says, "No white, Muslims, and definitely not a Black". This aspect of there religion is taking so seriously that when Jess was on the street corner with her friend Juliet (who has short hair) and they were laughing and hugging, her sisters-fiancé's parents saw her and thought she was kissing an English boy. Her sisters wedding got called off on the account that Jess displays poor characteristics on the family. The lady thought if Jess `s urge to break the social norm of the Indian homemaker displaying bad qualities then so will her sister and she was not fit to marry her son. Overall, the Hindu religion is very traditional and strict with their customs and beliefs.

Purchase Wrecked

I like to think I'm pretty open-minded. There have been many movies that have gotten horrible reviews that I've really liked. Someone else on here said something along the lines of "comparing Wrecked to Shortbus is an insult to Shortbus" and I couldn't agree more.

There was no point to this movie (except maybe "drugs are bad, MmmKay"), the acting was terrible, every scene just dragged, the nudity and sex was completely distasteful. Besides all that, there were several things about this movie that were totally awkward, or just plain didn't make sense. For example: Ryan is described as an 18 y/o attempting to develop a career as an actor... It appears he has a house (and a dog) all to himself, but his bedroom looks like a typical teenage studio apartment. He gets a part in a 3-person play and is rehearsing in what looks like a church basement. That must pay well, cuz he's always whipping twenties out of his pocket. Daniel is an on-again off-again fling who shows up one day with his backpack and moves right in to destroy Ryan's life.

So let's review: Ryan has no job, but always has money, he lives in a dump that is quite clearly a house but looks like a dorm room, and he's trying to launch a career as an actor in a church basement. Ryan knows Daniel is a slime ball but welcomes him with open arms, and pretty much says "Sure, you can move in, take advantage of me, get me hooked on drugs, and ruin my life... c'mon, what ya waiting for?" Don't even get me started on the weird Asian photographer buddy.

And the smoking!!! Good Lord. Everyone in this film is a chain smoker. Although I highly doubt I'll ever watch Wrecked again, if I do, it'd make for a great drinking game. "Drink every time someone lights a cigarette!" You'd be so hammered by the end of the film that you MIGHT not care how awful it was.

Where To Buy In Bruges

I've only previously seen Colin Farrell in the woeful "Alexander". After this, all is forgiven. He is marvellous as the hit-man who bungles his first job. Brendan Gleeson is equally good as his more experienced accomplice and Ralph Fiennes makes up a perfect threesome as the thuggish boss beset by his own odd code of honour. In spite of one glaring impossibility, I haven't enjoyed a film so much in ages. Just don't bring your maiden aunt, unless her hearing aid has a swear-word filter.Get more detail about In Bruges.

Shop For Couples Retreat

Sadly, I bought this movie because I ASSUMED that Couple's Retreat would be FUNNY. Oh boy was that a bad assumption. Lesson learned $20 later! :( Just because VINCE VAUGHN was funny in Wedding Crashers doesn't mean COUPLES RETREAT is funny, too!

If you walk away with anything from my review then I hope that you take this advice.....ALWAYS read other people's reviews before watching, or worse yet, buying a DVD because more often than not, other people's reviews are pretty much spot on!

My advice: SAVE your money...COUPLES RETREAT is nothing more than a SLEEPING PILL!

Brothers

You totally feel for the brother who had to risk his life in Afghanistan -- even when he is forced to commit an unspeakable crime to save his life. You also feel for the brother who has just got out of jail and for the wife who is left behind to take care of small children. And most of all you really feel for the daughter who feels neglected and less loved than her sister.

I loved the fact that I thought the wife was going to have an affair with her brother-in-law, but no such thing takes place. Threw me for a loop.

This film was actually much better than I thought it would be. Not something I would watch again and again, but a good expose of the post traumatic stress disorder that has impacted so many returning soldiers, and their families.Get more detail about Brothers.

Jade Warrior Review

First I have to say how exciting it is for me to watch any Finnish movie. I see my share of Dutch, Norwegian and Swedish stuff--but never Finn!

This film treats with a primary subject matter for Finns, especially eastern frontier Finnish people: The Kalevala, tales of the origins of the Finnish people. In this epic features a smith who pines for a wife: he is told by the gods he can have one if he forges the Sampo, which is a hallowed object akin to the Ark of the Covenant.

This film, as rare as a thylocine sighting, is a Chinese-Finnish endeavor. The Chinese (claiming this in the film) also seem to share a similar tale, and even share the term "SAMPO", with the Finns. If you've ever seen Finnish people, they do look a bit Chinese. Kind of like a nation of Keanu Reeves clones, except the girls are much more beautiful.

In this story, a modern ironsmith Kai, played by the stunning Tommi Eronen, is contacted by government archeologist/spy Berg (Markku Peltola). Berg, along with his female partner, have found the Sampo in a dig dating back 4,000 years. Apparently, through machinations I don't care to explain, the Sampo "reacts" to Kai's hair.

Tommi Eronen plays a double bill: he is also the ancient warrior Sintai, a Chinese monk whose mother was Finnish. Sintai runs around with the original Sampo but it isn't clear whether or not he made it. The way the film weaves between 2,000 B.C. and the modern day is rather fascinating. Not anyone could pull of such a terrific cinematic trick.

And in fact modern Finland in some locations looks a little ancient too. What looks bad, at least to my eyes, are the depictions of ancient China. There are some gripping scenes but otherwise it looks like they invited a bunch of Chinese to film in a bunch of old Finnish buildings.

The martial arts scenes are unimpressive because I sense the director did not know how to film them--they should have really worked well but they fall flat. It is somewhat compensated-for: Tommi Eronen's exquisite acting along with his physical beauty. His silken voice rarely betrays emotions, but his eyes are incomparable. As I said, people may note a resemblance to Keanu around Tommi's eyes, but all resemblance ends there.

As to the rest, do not even try to follow the plotline of this Sampo-Ancient-Chinese-Reincarnation movie. It's enough that they had the courage to try it.Get more detail about Jade Warrior.

Romeo + Juliet Buy Now

As a mild reader of Shakespeare, I have seen filmed adaptations of only Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo & Juliet. Even though there are a few flaws attached to these movies, I still found them enjoyable, except for one. Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film adaptation of Romeo & Juliet is one that I can't really adore. The entire film is bloated with an overly stylish look and a modernization that looks to have gone too far. First off, I will say that hearing Shakespearean dialogue in a completely modern setting is very awkward. It really confuses the tone of the film: it's like hearing the dialogue from the Lord of the Rings trilogy in a contemporary sports drama. Old and new doesn't work well here. The lack of accents are even worse. Most of these actors sound odd when reciting the text, mainly because they don't have the perfect voices for it. I may be a bit picky, but hearing Shakespeare from modern characters sounds strange. The script could have at least had some contemporary phrases added in. The biggest problem I have with this movie, however, is the excessive style. The Capulet scene especially is overstuffed with colorful costumes and sets, and some dizzying camerawork. The melodrama in the quieter scenes are so overdone that they're actually silly. The heartbreaking ending is slightly over-the-top, but at least it's done quite well. Nonetheless, a majority of this film is a spectacle of style-over-substance, and I don't think Shakespeare would be pleased with it if ever he were alive to see it.

Maybe I'm just not a fan of Luhrmann. I've seen his other film, Moulin Rouge!, and I dislike it for some of the same reasons I dislike Romeo + Juliet. I do like the music and the supporting cast, but I don't care about everything else in the movie.

Grade: DGet more detail about Romeo + Juliet.

Save Battlestar Galactica:The Mini-Series

I haven't seen the actual series yet, but this 3 hour miniseries is a nice introduction. I have trouble ever really loving a pilot for a series. It always seems to drag on as each character is introduced. This mini series was no exception. It did get better as it unfolded and everything is set up nicely for the actual series in the end. There is some nice action and some great CG effects throughout that help the space battle sequences. The actors themselves do there best, but a few characters like the XO really come off as very annoying. I hope they can rectify some of these characters throughout the series to make them more likable, or kill them off all together. The show does conclude on a nice twist that leaves you wanting more, and in the end I recommend that you rent this DVD just to get introduced to the characters, and then move on from there.Get more detail about Battlestar Galactica:The Mini-Series.

Discount Life Blood

Also known by the title Murder World, this straight-to-video vampire flick offers a few reasons to make it fairly watchable. Most notably the beautiful English-Australian pop singer/model/actress Sophie Monk(The Hills Run Red). She's definitely not your average creature of the night.

Brooke and Rhea are a nice young lesbian couple that committed an inconceivable murder at a party back in the 60's. Instead of being punished, God (a female God btw) decides to recruit them as her tool for destroying evil. So 40 years later (I guess God is a great procrastinator) these ladies are sent back to Earth as blood-sucking vampire zombie angel lesbians. Yee-haw.

This twist to the genre doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but at least it's something different. The two fangless femme fatales wander around the desert in their underwear and start a vicious killing spree. There is a touch of humor and some decent gore effects, but nothing special. Plus some people might enjoy the moments of gratuitous nudity from the backup actresses.

I do feel like the concept of punishing evildoers wasn't developed near enough. The story essentially consists of one lady vampire killing random people while her partner is conflicted with the senseless violence, despite God's orders. Anyway, this mission did seem to lack any real purpose. Why couldn't these sexy bloodsuckers go after terrorists, pedophiles, drug dealers and other scumbags? There is absolutely no justice in this world.

I was surprised by the abrupt ending, which seemed way too rushed. Anyway, this isn't a complete waste. Vampire lovers might wanna take a look.Get more detail about Life Blood.

West Side Story Immediately

This musical works with the Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet, but the ending is absurd. Juliet lives. Both have to die in their love for each other, as the mortal world cannot contain their relationship. Also, as Maria walks away, it looks like all is resolved; it cannot be the case.Their deaths dispel the warring gangs; the temptation to violence is over as these two lovers become the sacrificial figures that stop the hatred and violence for good. It has to be both.

Their mutual deaths erase for a time, the terrible racist conflicts that typify the two gangs. The degrading feud has a wide effect, and that is why it is called, this musiocal, WEst Side Story, and not Maria and Tony or whatever.

The tragedy is missing, and the loose ends are too awkward to ignore. A real failure in plot, and, in this musical version, in the castin as well.

Elvis Presley was supposed to be Tony at one point, and Anna Maria Alberghetti Maria. Talent went out the window, with the present cast, and so did verisimilitude.Get more detail about West Side Story.

First off I hated the first Hulk movie... I can't tell you why it's been so long but I HATED it! Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Decide Now

...this is what we get. A long, cheesy, terrible episode of the television show. You know the odd numbered rule about the Star Trek movies? It really applies to this movie. This was just absolutely horrible. The plot, the effects, the conflict, the unfulfilling ending...man. Horrible. But I'm not going to spend this review talking about how bad this movie was. I'm going to talk about how it could have been good, and how they wasted so much potential.

The movie starts off with a guy riding through a desert on some horse-like animal. He comes up to a little bald guy defending some holes in the sand. The stranger gets off the horse thing and tells the bald guy to "share your pain with me". The bald guy starts crying because he has absolutely no hair at all. The stranger, whose name is Sybok, is then revealed to be a Vulcan. When the bald guy comments on this, Sybok starts laughing like a nut. We then cut to William Shatner trying to scale his own ego. He, Spock, and Bones are on shore leave and have decided to spend it camping. They have a scene where they try to teach campfire songs to Spock. Many people hated this scene, but I thought it was kind of funny. This is interrupted, however, because a hostage situation has developed at Nakatomi...uh...some planet. The Vulcan from the opening scene has captured the capital city, and has captured three important officials, a Romulan, a human, and a Klingon. Enterprise has been ordered to take direct action, even though the new ship is literally falling apart. The admiral says that they need an experienced captain to settle the problem, no matter what the status of his ship is. This felt kind of contrived to me. If they wanted an experienced captain, why didn't they just beam Kirk over to a ship that was working properly? Because then we wouldn't have had all that suspense with them having to do their jobs in spite of the ship's problems.

So they get to the planet and fight their way into the Vulcan guy's city. They get to the hostages, but it turns out that the hostages have all "shared their pain" with Sybok, and are now loyal to him. The whole thing was a plan of Sybok's to capture a starship which will aid him on his "quest". We don't know what that is yet. So the boarding party is forced to fly the shuttle back to the Enterprise. You see, the transporters on the ship aren't working. Also, a Klingon commander is after the Enterprise. He wants Kirk. The Klingons still have a grudge against Kirk for blowing up the Klingons when they were trespassing on his ship. So the shuttle makes it into the hangar just before the klingon ship attacks them. I know many people hate this scene, but I actually liked it. As they are getting off the shuttlecraft, Kirk jumps Sybok. Sybok overpowers him, but Spock grabs a gun and has a chance to kill Sybok. He does not, however. Instead, he allows Sybok to take the gun from him he is recaptured.

Now let's review here. At this point, I thought the movie was okay. You have a pretty interesting conflict going on. A Vulcan who appears to be delusional is in possession of the Enterprise. And he and Spock appear to know each other. Spock refused to kill him, which makes him a very personal enemy for Spock. We don't know exactly what Sybok wants with the ship, but they could have made him a crazy terrorist leader or something. They could have made this about Spock having to overcome his feelings towards Sybok and help Kirk take over the ship. At the very least, they could have made it a dumb action movie about terrorists taking over the Enterprise and Kirk and Spock trying to defeat the terrorists by themselves. Instead, out of the blue, we get Sybok trying to find GOD.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Spock says that Sybok is his half-brother, in one of the biggest plot contrivances I've ever heard of.

Spock: Sybok is my brother.

Kirk: I know for a fact that you don't have a brother.

Spock: Well, I have a half-brother.

What? Like I said, contrived. So the rest of this movie is too painful for me to go into too much detail on. Sybok persuades them to assist him on his quest to find God. They decide to the center of the galaxy and through the Great Barrier. Which might mean something if we had ever heard of the Great Barrier before. They get through the barrier, and they go to the planet. It turns out that the thing on the planet is not God, and Sybok sacrifices himself to allow the others to escape. Suddenly, the Klingons (why are they even in the movie?) attack the Enterprise. Spock convinces General Korrd, the Klingon hostage, to talk the Klingons down. Korrd succeds, and the klingons beam Kirk off the planet. Everyone is saved, and the audiences walk out of the theater cursing Shatner.

Most people would say that the movie in it's entirety is bad. I disagree. As I stated before, I thought the first half was pretty good. The second half was terrible. The plot just didn't know what it was doing in that half. One minute the movie is about terrorists taking control of the Enterprise, then all of a sudden it's about God, then it's some kind of demon and not really God, then the Klingons are thrown into the mix (why not?) then the movie just kind of ends. I want to talk about the effects for a minute. The previous four Trek movies were not very big on the effects. But they were all better than this one. I know there was some confusion with Industrial Light and Magic working on the Back to the Future sequels instead of this, but man. These effects were bad. This was the only Star Trek movie that reminded me of the TV show. The effects, the plot, the terrible ending, and the heavy-handed message were all very reminiscent of an episode of the series. Star Trek 5 was a failure for many reasons, not the least of which was the directing job done by one Willian Shatner. The plot, the effects, the story, the conflicts were simply terrible. This is not, in my opinion as bad as Star Trek the Motion Picture, but it is close.

I decided to post a link to a rifftrax clip of this movie. If you don't know what rifftrax is, it's the same thing as MST3K. If you don't know what that is, just click the link anyway. The clip his hilarious.Get more detail about Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

Lowest Price Dirty Dancing

The Keepsake Edition comes packaged in a cardboard package that measures approx. 8" tall and 2" deep. It may pose a problem for storage for some. This is easily remedied by tossing the outer packaging and keeping the enclosed reg. size dvd (cardboard) case and extra keepsake book. As for the content- Enclosed is the blu ray movie plus digital copy, A keepsake hardcover book written by Eleanor Bergstein(writer and coproducer of the movie). A Fifty dollar off coupon for the Mountain Lake Hotel( where most of the movie was filmed).
The Bluray looked great on my sony LCD, the audio sounded fantastic on my Onkyo 7.1. I loved the extra features included on the bluray! There was a feature on the filming locations of the movie (Kellarman's Reliving the Locations), Tear jerking tributes to Swayze, Ardolino,Orbach, Behind the scene commentaries, Music videos, cast interviews, etc. The list goes on and on!
The keepsake book- includes bios of the main characters and what they have been up to since filming dirty dancing. Lots of movie photos as well.
Overall- I am happy with my purchase. I think for those that already own Dirty Dancing on dvd- this is a must have for the blu ray picture, audio and extra content.Get more detail about Dirty Dancing.

Low Price Forbidden Kingdom

I am happy that you reminded me of this DVD. I ordered for this movie when I was in Texas, but I have not received it up till today. I made several attempt to call your representatives, but the call was not helpful. So, I don't want to say anything about it until this issue is resolved.Get more detail about Forbidden Kingdom.
