West Side Story Immediately
This musical works with the Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet, but the ending is absurd. Juliet lives. Both have to die in their love for each other, as the mortal world cannot contain their relationship. Also, as Maria walks away, it looks like all is resolved; it cannot be the case.Their deaths dispel the warring gangs; the temptation to violence is over as these two lovers become the sacrificial figures that stop the hatred and violence for good. It has to be both.
Their mutual deaths erase for a time, the terrible racist conflicts that typify the two gangs. The degrading feud has a wide effect, and that is why it is called, this musiocal, WEst Side Story, and not Maria and Tony or whatever.
The tragedy is missing, and the loose ends are too awkward to ignore. A real failure in plot, and, in this musical version, in the castin as well.
Elvis Presley was supposed to be Tony at one point, and Anna Maria Alberghetti Maria. Talent went out the window, with the present cast, and so did verisimilitude.Get more detail about West Side Story.
